Hatzola International Conference, Jerusalem - May 2019

In 1969 when ambulances regularly took 20 minutes or more to reach their patients, Reb Herschel Weber founded Hatzalah. It started with a few volunteers in Williamsburg, Brooklyn who carried oxygen tanks and first aid kits. They had minimal training but maximum motivation.

Reb Herschel got his motivation after a prominent member of the Chasidic Jewish community had a heart attack and died while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. As a response, he decided to start his own volunteer-run ambulance service, which he aptly named “Hatzalah”.

Over time, Hatzalah has evolved from one branch into many affiliate divisions, becoming the largest volunteer ambulance service in the world.

Hatzalah organizations function in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Israel, Mexico, Panama, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, United Kingdom and Ukraine as well as in ten different US states.

May 2019 was the 50th anniversary of the creation of Hatzalah and to commemorate this milestone, volunteers from the worldwide Hatzalah units, joined forces with Magen David Adom (MDA) in Israel, to collaborate and take part in intense training with the IDF, Special Forces Search & Rescue units and elite police units, learning new skills, sharing knowledge and creating an incredible Achdus. Over 200 participants took part and Hatzola Northwest (serving North West London) sent five volunteers to represent the UK.

The first three days were spent on the Zikim army base near Ashkelon, close to the border of Gaza doing training activities and listening to lectures on key topics, which in turn will assist the communities we serve. During their time on the base, the volunteers adopted an army lifestyle, training long hours and waking at 5am for shacharis, breakfast and further drills.

On Wednesday night, the team traveled to Meron, not only to bask in the holiness of the night and be part of the incredible experience, but also to spend the night doing shifts, working alongside other emergency units and manning the medical treatment tents.

The culmination of the week was Shabbos in Yerushalayim, where the group davened together at the Kosel on Friday Night and Churva Shul on Shabbos Morning, eating the Shabbos meals in the old city and joined by Mezamrim. The t’fillos, z’miros, divrei torah and atmosphere were inspiring and uplifting, with an amazing level of Achdus experienced.

Testimonials

"We would like to thank you for your efficient service provided by your organisation. We were impressed by the speed they arrived and attended to my wife who had a fall."

"When my husband was taken ill, your medics arrived promptly. The crew were very friendly, kind and super efficient. I have used your service before and feel privileged to be able to do so."

"I am writing to say how very grateful I am for your volunteers who took me to the RFH.

They were so caring and professional and I was attended to much quicker because they had brought me into hospital."

"I used Hatzola a week and a half ago after cutting my thumb with a rather sharp and serrated kitchen knife. Everybody from the lady on the phone to the 2 medics that attended, helped me feel calm and I knew I was in safe hands. Being 32 weeks pregnant with my first child I was getting a bit nervous as there was a lot of blood but the medics calmly dressed it and told me to go to hospital to get it glued."

"I feel very honoured to be part of a community where we are so well looked after, especially by the staff at Hatzola who are walking Angels and true examples of being selfless. An incredible organisation, efficient and well organised. Will be a priority of my charity from now on...."

"Please send a big thank you to everyone who was involved in getting me to hospital on Shabbat two/three weeks ago. I became very suddenly unwell and in extreme pain. I cannot thank you enough for coming so quickly, efficiently and kindly to my assistance."

"I was very very unwell last Erev Shabbos and had absolutely no choice but to call Hatzola 40 min before Shabbos. The volunteers were with us within 3 minutes, selflessly helping and assisting in every way possible with highest professionalism and Mesiras Nefesh. The ambulance was then called and I was taken to the A&E of the RFH. We were at the RFH within 10 minutes. All 4 people were absolutely amazing and a huge Yashar Koach to all of them, Brachah V’Hatzlahah."

"We cannot thank you enough for coming to our home on Friday night to care for our son, and take us to hospital. The members and crew were wonderful, caring and reassuring and made us feel much better in what was a very stressful situation Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

"I just wanted to say thank you to Hatzola for attending to me on motzai shabbos for a minor incident. The level of care and skill was absolutely exemplary and is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for taking time to help people in the community at all times."

"I would just like to really thank you for the professional care you gave me when I was in need. I appreciate the fact that you showed complete dedication, with utmost care and concern to help me, even if it wasn’t life threatening.
